How it works

The road to Biosecurity & Traceability

BIOSEK guides participants, through a structured approach to optimise B&T, and production management levels, by providing guidelines to participating primary producers/farmers, service providers and value chain participants to build and establish business-specific unique protocols and biosecurity status.

Download the FREE 5 STEPS and guidelines designed to assist participants to serve the domestic and international markets with confidence.

Below is a brief introduction to the 5 Steps in our FREE Biosecurity Guide.

Step 01.

Animal Identification

Adherence to and compliance with “The Livestock Identification Act, 2002 (Act 6 of 2002) (“AIDA”) is mandatory for all accredited BIOSEK members.

BIOSEK provides guidelines and assistance regarding Branding/tattooing (mandatory), Herd GLN registration, Business location, Product/animal and various ID Systems.

step 02.

Herd Health & Production Management Plan

Adherence to and compliance with” The Animal Disease Act 35 of 1984” is mandatory for all accredited BIOSEK membership purposes.

V-PLAN provides guidelines and systems for planned vaccination and other preventive practices Recording and reporting systems for reference purposes are shared.

Specific disease management required by the livestock value chain is shared with primary producers and the value chain where specially needed.

The ultimate goal is to prepare the industry for participation in an ever-changing consumer-driven world and ensure the sector’s sustainability.

Step 03.

Housekeeping and General hygiene.

The food supply chain is under constant scrutiny regarding the threat of disease or contamination along the agricultural value chain.

Guidelines are supplied for self-assessment and opportunity to build and implement protocols pertaining to the specific market being targeted. Both domestic and international requirements and demands are addressed as far as possible.

Step 04.

Daily observation, reporting procedure and recording.

Daily observation, recording, assessment and, if required, action to be taken form part and parcel of any production line or process. The livestock industry is therefore to exception to the rule.

Each stage in the value chain is responsible for its own observation and action system. An example of guidelines for primary producers/farmers to follow and adhere to is provided.

The value chain “post” the farm gate has its own sector protocols that are dealt with on request.

Step 05.

Controls and Checklist

This all-encompassing guideline and checklist are provided for members and their designated veterinarian to work through and extract whatever suits their market related requirements.

Furthermore, it is a guideline for members to set their own level of excellence which would distinguish their business from the rest.

The purpose of the 5 steps is for the member to set their own BIOSECURITY STATUS then qualify as ACCREDITED BIOSEK MEMBERS for marketing purposes on the BIOSEK marketing platform.
